Title: It's in the Cards!: Planning & Implementing an Artist Trading Cards Swap Program

Program Description

Do you want to create a community art program for all ages with limited resources and limited time? An Artist Trading Cards Swap Program maybe just the thing you're looking for! Learn about these small, portable works of art that are intended for trading. Tips, tricks, and a breakdown of logistics will be covered during this session.

• Participants will be able to identify the difference between ATCs and ACEOs.
• Participants will be able to identify 4-6 of their current, seasonal programs that could incorporate ATCs craft sessions.
• By the end of the session, participants will understand the resources necessary to create an ATC Swap program at their library.
  

Presenter Bio

Holly May started her library career in the Beaufort County, SC public library system while attending the University of South Carolina for her master's degree. Since 2003, she has served in the Department of Defense (DoD) Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) libraries including bases in Okinawa, Japan; Valdosta, GA; Ramstein, Germany; Brussels, Belgium; and Yuma, AZ. She also served at Headquarters level for the Navy Library Program in Washington, DC. Holly is the Supervisory Librarian at the Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) Station Library at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, AZ. Her library is part of the 20-library Marine Corps system and the 200-library DoD MWR Libraries system.

Title: Peers Helping Peers: Career Development for Student Aides inside Libraries and Beyond

Program Description

ASU Libraries employs over 150 students as opposed to 170 full time staff and academic professionals. Most of these students will never pursue careers within the library or even academia, yet the skills they develop through dynamic, personable supervision suit a variety of career paths. This session will discuss strategies for recruiting, retaining, and developing transferable skills for Student Library Aides.

Learning outcomes:

• Techniques to help student staff develop transferable skills
• How to mentor aides from student employee to career professional
• Examples of successful experiences working with student employees

The Mountain Plains Library Association (MPLA) supports libraries and library staff in twelve states, including Arizona.  Come to this lively, interactive session to discover your place in MPLA.

• What MPLA is and what makes it unique
• What benefits MPLA offers for members across the region, and
• Upcoming MPLA conferences and events

Presenter Bios

Amadee Ricketts has worked in public libraries all over the west since receiving an MLIS at Dominican University / College of St. Catherine in 2002.  Since 2016, she has been the director of the Cochise County Library District, based in Bisbee, AZ.

Originally from Idaho, Amber Kent is the Library Manager at the City of Casa Grande Public Library. She graduated from BYU-Idaho and Clarion University of Pennsylvania. She is an active member of the Arizona Library Association, having held various positions over the years, and is currently the MPLA Representative. Recently, she achieved her Certified Public Library Administrator (CPLA) designation from the American Library Association.. Outside of work, Amber enjoys spending time with her husband, five children, and managing their small business.
