Program Description

The University of Arizona Libraries and the State of Arizona Research Library are collaborating on a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) Grant to digitize historical Arizona newspapers for the Library of Congress’ open access newspaper database, Chronicling America. Some of the titles to be digitized include newspapers published from 1912 to 1963 in the West Valley of the Phoenix area: The Tolleson Independent, The Westside Enterprise, and The Westside Weekly, and The Buckeye Valley News and The Buckeye Valley News and Buckeye Review.

In this presentation:

  • Learn about the history of the communities as reflected in their newspapers.
  • Learn about how librarians can use these and other digitized newspapers to assist library patrons and researchers.
  • Learn where to find resources for continued research

Presenter Bios

Mary Feeney is News Research Librarian and Liaison Librarian for History, Journalism, and Gender & Women’s Studies at the University of Arizona Libraries, where she partners with faculty and students in their research, teaching, and learning. She is co-principal investigator on Arizona’s National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) grant in collaboration with the State Library of Arizona. Mary has presented and published about the use of newspapers in research, newspaper digitization, and teaching with primary sources.

Asa Espanto is the Newspaper Librarian at the State of Arizona Research Library. She has a background in linguistics, art history, and fashion and textile history.
