Title: Flipping the library: Executing an unorthodox strategy to improve the library space for its community of users

Program Description

Recognizing that youth are Guadalupe Library’s primary customer base, Guadalupe Library and MCLD Facilities moved forward with an unorthodox concept of “flipping” the library allotting the larger, primary space to youth while also providing adults and others in need of a quiet area an insular and separate space for their needs. Now, ample space exists for youth truly separate from adults and others needing to focus. This may appear to be a simple concept, but this remodel truly takes into consideration the need of all Guadalupe Library users.

• Identify information to present to your supervisors and administration in favor of changing your space
• Identify possible funding sources for your project
• Expand one’s knowledge to actively apply equity in a library’s space

Presenter Bio

Andrea Castañeda has been the manager of the Guadalupe Library for five years but has over seven years of working experience at the Guadalupe Library with the Maricopa County Library District. As the Library Paraprofessional at Guadalupe from 2014 to 2016 and a Librarian I & II with the Mesa Public Library from 2016 to 2018, she performed an array of programs for library users of all ages during this time. She earned her MLIS through the University of Arizona in 2016 and is a Knowledge River Scholar, having participated in the 13th cohort as its first distance student.

Title: Scanning and Weeding: A Prescribed Burn of the State of Arizona Research Library's Map Collection

Program Description

This presentation will provide a detailed walkthrough of a map collection development project underway at the State of Arizona Research Library. The project entails evaluating every map to determine its suitability in the collection. Some maps will be scanned and made accessible online, others will be weeded and discarded. The purpose of this project is to enhance discoverability of the collection's best maps through digitization, while reducing the collection's size by weeding maps that do not fit the collection development policy.

Learning outcomes include:

• Planning a large scale evaluation of a physical collection.
• Establishing efficient workflows to implement the evaluation.
• Creating or revising policies to maintain the health of the collection going forward.

Presenter Bio

Ryan Ehrfurth is the Arizona Memory Project Administrator and Maps Librarian at the State of Arizona Research Library. He formerly provided research support for the Arizona State Board on Geographic and Historic Names. He has a Master's Degree in Public History from Arizona State University. Work projects include completing a platform migration of the Arizona Memory Project with assistance from the Discovery Librarian, and spearheading efforts to process and reorganize the Library's physical map collection. When he's not working, Ryan enjoys playing video games with excellent maps.

Title: Weeding Your Collection While Growing Your Team: How You Can Do Both

Program Description

Most libraries agree that weeding is a necessary process to keep the collection fresh. But does weeding have to be a solitary activity? Come learn how GateWay Community College Library found a way to engage all our team members in a yearlong weeding project. When the library decided that the Reference Collection needed to be dismantled, the work was organized and divided between the entire staff.

• See the positive impacts team weeding can have for your team and your collection
• Be inspired by tips to keep the momentum going
