Program Description:
As the COVID pandemic forced libraries and educational institutions to abruptly shift their services to online and hybrid modalities, library staff were facing new and pressing copyright questions from their patrons and colleagues. While the pandemic brought new questions, our everyday work in libraries has always required us to interpret copyright law. With technology changing how documents (of all types and format) are created, shared, and used, library personnel make interpretations of copyright law daily. Believing that libraries in the Western U.S. have unique barriers to receiving quality copyright education, we conducted a survey and focus groups with library personnel regarding their prior copyright education; the need for additional education; and what barriers they face in accessing that education. In this presentation we will share what we learned and talk about how it informs our plans for developing future copyright education opportunities.
Presenters:
The Western Copyright Alliance was formed by four librarians united by their love of copyright and the inspiration found in the red rocks at the Kraemer Copyright Conference in Colorado Springs. After successfully securing an IMLS grant in 2020 to explore the copyright information needs of library personnel in the western United States, our team expanded. Your presenters are:
